The Liverpool committee from left to right is as follows: Martin Culley; Eddie Hincks; Graham O’Hagan, Melanie Allen, Steve Allcock and Elaine Lang. (Please Note: We had our Annual General Meeting in January 2018 and there are a couple of changes to let you know.  We have a new Vice Chair, Andre Cheminais - better known as Chem. We would like to say goodbye and also a massive thank you to Steve Alcock, our exiting vice chair, for all his time, effort and support for CHICS.  The meetings will definitely not be the same without him!! Steve we’re all going to miss you. The rest of the committee remains the same.)

As we have many new CHICS members, we thought it would be a good idea to tell you more about ourselves:

Martin Culley – His son Tom was diagnosed with ALL at age 2 and he finished treatment aged 5 in February 2015. Martin has been raising money for CHICS since 2012.

Eddie Hincks – Ed joined CHICS in 1991 when his son Colin, then aged 12 was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma. Colin is now a 38 years old father.

Graham O’Hagan – His son Ben was diagnosed with ALL at almost age 14. Ben is now 20 and is at university in Sheffield studying Biochemistry.

Melanie Allen – Joined CHICS in 2011 after her son Ben almost aged 4 was diagnosed with ALL. Ben is now nearly 10.

Andre Cheminais - Chem is dad to Mark who was diagnosed with a brain tumour in April 2005. Mark is now a strapping 15 year old who supports Liverpool and attends Sacred Heart School, Crosby.

Elaine Lang – Her son (another Ben!) was diagnosed at 14 months old with a brain tumour. Ben is now 14.

Meetings are normally held the second Tuesday of each month at 8.00pm at Ronald McDonald House. Everyone is welcome, it is informal and very friendly, so why not give it a try. Our next meeting will be on the 13th March.

10-12 year olds & Teenagers:
Patients and siblings age 10-12, are eligible to join the 10-12 group. They are supervised by CRB checked adults and would give them a chance to get to know each other having lots of fun at the cinema, bowling and many other events. If you have a child in this age group and think they may be interested in attending then please call the office and leave their names.

If any of your children (patient or siblings) are 13 or over, they are eligible to join the teenage section of CHICS. The emphasis is on fun and being with children who find themselves in similar circumstances.

These group meet every few months (no parents) and go on trips to places like the cinema, crazy golf, bowling, trampolining, Go-Karting, days out and meals out. If you think your child would be interested in joining either of these groups, please e-mail Melanie with your name, age of child and mobile number to be added to the group. For all current members of either group, could you also e-mail your name and mobile number as in future when we are organising trips out, we will do this via text / e-mail if required.

Bereavement Group:
We are looking to resume the Liverpool section bereavement group. If you are interested in attending, please contact the office.

Bereavement Book:
CHICS have a bereavement book which is kept in the Alder Centre. If anyone requires a form to place an entry in the book, please contact the office.

Eddie's Day Off:
Eddie will be in clinic on Wednesday and Thursday, and will be in the CHICS office on Tuesday and Friday. Eddie doesn’t work on a Monday. Also, could I point out that the messages left on the office answer machines are picked up every day, so unless it’s a real emergency could we ask you not to ring Eddie at home, leave a message on the phone and we will get back to you.

There are "No More Paper Newsletters". We were wasting far too much time and money (approx. 1000 a year) sending out paper newsletters. In this day and age, there are more efficient, faster and less costly ways to view the newsletter so we took the decision not to produce any more paper newsletters. If you would like to receive the Liverpool CHICS newsletter by e-mail please provide us with your e-mail address by e-mailing Eddie.

New Facebook Page:
We have a new Facebook page to try and raise our fundraising profile – it is called CHICS Liverpool. This is a public page that you can share with your friends and family. We would love to receive any photos to post on this page so that we can show the public what a unique charity we really are. Please e-mail any photos you wish to be published to Melanie.

What Do You Want From CHICS?
We at CHICS would really like to know what you would like to see the committee offering by way of support. Would you please e-mail Elaine with your suggestions. We are a family support group and we would love to develop this role even further. We are looking at inviting speakers along to the meetings to give practical help and advice on anything you would like. So please think about it and e-mail Elaine with any idea, it would be great to build up the attendance of the meetings.

Calling All Volunteers:
Would you like to be a volunteer for CHICS, it’s a great opportunity to meet other volunteers who give up their free time to support CHICS at events such as fundraising, manning stalls, bag-packing, helping out at social events, etc. Please e-mail Eddie or contact the CHICS office if you are interested.

Request to Parents:
Do we have any parents who are willing to be CRB checked? This is because we sometimes require individuals to supervise children on route to holidays, day trips, holidays etc. If you are willing please contact the office.

Trips - Get More Involved With CHICS:
Give us your ideas. Have any of you had a great day out this year? Would you recommend it to others? Well we would love to hear from you. We are constantly on the look out for places to go. As you can appreciate CHICS has visited many places over the years, but we are constantly looking for fresh ideas so please start thinking and contact the office with your ideas. Or better still come a long to a meeting.

CHICS as a charity can only grow with your support:
You or a family member may be able to organise fundraising amongst friends, neighbours or in the workplace. Ask people you know to remember CHICS - Children’s Cancer Support Group - if they are ever requested to nominate a charity to receive a donation or funding. Your child’s school may raise funds through a cake bake, non-uniform day, summer or Christmas fair by having a stall with tombola, we can also give you CHICS merchandise to sell - see "Items for Sale" below. Have you got any ideas how we can do new and exciting fundraising???

Items for Sale:
We have received our new stock items for sale and these include pens 60p, trolley coins 1.00, pins 1.00, mugs 1.50 and T-shirts 3.50 all with the CHICS logo. If you or any of your family can sell any items at work or school please contact Eddie at the office. Also, you can not fail to have noticed how the wrist bands, started by the Lance Armstrong Foundation to raise money for Cancer Charities have taken the nation by storm. So we thought we would have our very own CHICS band done. What we need now are our members to sell as many as they can, if you are able to do this contact the office and we will get these out to you.

Collection Boxes:
CHICS have a supply of collection boxes. We are requesting member's to go in to their local shops and ask if they can leave a box to be filled. If you can place a box please contact Eddie at the CHICS office. Anyone who has placed a collection box and has not had it emptied for a while, could you either chase it up, or let us know and we can go and empty it.

Russell Keenan Talk – to be repeated in Liverpool:
Russell Keenan will be repeating his talk on leukaemia research, locally, nationally and internationally. The presentation includes details on the children who have travelled to Seattle for treatment. If you are interested in this (date to be announced) and couldn’t make it to Bromborough when he did the talk in June, please
contact the CHICS office.

Maclaren Major Buggy for Loan:
If you require the loan of a Maclaren Major Buggy, please contact Eddie either by e-mail or telephone.

Children’s Wish Charities:
If you are unaware of the wish charities out there, please take a look at and contact Eddie if you need any assistance with applying.

Future Trips:
It has been brought to our attention that there are families who have not been successful in securing places on trips, this cannot be allowed to continue, so in future all places on trips will be allocated on the basis of demand and whether you have been before. When you phone to book you can leave your details and you will be contacted if you have secured a place.
